This ice cream recipe alternative is so easy to make you’ll wonder how you lived without it. This is suitable for almost everyone. It’s a dairy-free ‘ice cream’ and doesn’t need an ice cream maker. It tastes great and you don’t need to add any sugar. Furthermore, unlike ice cream, you can eat as much of it as you want without feeling guilty!

Half of this recipe is frozen bananas, If you’ve never tried a frozen banana before, we think you’re missing out. If you’ve got some bananas that have gone brown and you’re not keen on them that ripe you can still use them. Simply chop them up and put them in the freezer for a few hours. This recipe takes this a little bit further. Just follow the simple method below.

Alternative ice cream recipe ingredients
This dairy-free ice cream only needs 2 ingredients and that’s bananas and strawberries. The best bananas to use are ones that are very ripe where the skin has turned brown. This is because they have a higher sugar (fructose) content which means they don’t freeze rock solid like ice. It also means they taste better.
On top of this over ripe bananas contain more antioxidants than green or just ripe bananas so they’re good for you that way too.
How to make this alternative banana and strawberry recipe
Time needed: 6 hours and 30 minutes
Here are the steps you need to make this recipe. Apart from the freezing time this is really quick to make.
- Get your ingredients for this recipe
This ice cream recipe couldn’t be any simpler. You just need to get enough bananas and strawberries to make the servings required for your family. You want one large banana per serving. We find half the weight of the bananas in strawberries works best. - Freeze
Next, pop the bananas and strawberries into the freezer for a couple of hours. You don’t have to freeze them separately as we have. - Blend
After the 2 hours is up, remove them from the freezer and blend them up. A hand blender works fine for this step. - Freeze
Then pour the contents into a freezable container and put it back into the freezer for 4 hours for the final part of this banana and strawberry ice cream recipe. - Serve and enjoy your healthy ice cream
Take your dairy-free ice cream out of the freezer and allow it to stand for between 15 and 25 minutes before serving.
Some other ideas
There are many other things you can do with this recipe. You could add some cinnamon to this, chopped almonds, flaxseed or crushed honeycomb among other things.
Why not try serving this on waffles, pancakes or top with yogurt.
